Streaming protocols

The following protocol are supported by Nimble Streamer for various use cases. Please also check our monthly report called The State of Streaming Protocols which shows the changes in protocols usage over time.

Apple HLS

Apple HTTP Live Streaming is the primary protocol which is handled by Nimble Streamer. It's available in live mode via RTMP, MPEG-TS and Icecast transmuxing and VOD mode via MP4, MP3, and AAC, transmuxing. Icecast, MP3 and AAC transmuxing generates audio-only HLS. Multi-bitrate support is available via live ABR and SMIL. It's also available for re-streaming and load balancing from any HLS source.
Supported video codec: H.264. Supported audio codecs: AAC, AAC-LC, HE-AAC (accPlus) v1 & v2, MP3.

RTMP

Real-Time Messaging Protocol is used for transmuxing of live transmission into HLS from published and pulled streams. Adaptive bitrate HLS streams can also be created from multiple RTMP streams.
RTMP re-publishing is available for pulled and published streams; also pulled RTMP faiover is suported. This allows load balancing and efficient re-streaming.
Supported video codec: H.264. Supported audio codecs: AAC, AAC-LC, HE-AAC (accPlus) v1 & v2, MP3.

Progressive download (pseudo-streaming)

Nimble Streamer supports variety of formats for pseudo-streaming: MP4, FLV, MP3, OGA, OGV, WAV, AAC, WebM, MKV. It allows HTTP range seeking for all formats and time-mark seeking for FLV. Progressive download is also available in re-streaming and load balancing.

MPEG-TS (MPEG2TS)

MPEG2 Transport Stream is used for transmuxing of live transmission into HLS. Adaptive bitrate can be created by combining multiple MPEG-TS streams. It can be delivered via UDP (both multicast and unicast) and HTTP connections.
MPEG-TS also can be used as a transmuxing output from Icecast or SHOUTcast stream.
Supported video codec: H.264. Supported audio codecs: AAC, AAC-LC, HE-AAC (accPlus) v1 & v2, MP3.

Icecast

Nimble Streamer accepts Icecast incoming stream for transmuxing to audio-only HLS or MPEG-TS. It also allows re-streaming Icecast.
