How to specify a play start time and duration for HTTP streaming

joël 2014-11-13 13:15:45 UTC in Nimble Streamer

Hi, is it possible to specify a start time for vod streaming with nimble streamserver?

like:
htttp://[Nimble-ip-address]:8081/vod/sample.mp4/playlist.m3u8?nimbleplaystart=30000&nimbleplayduration=40000

Hi Joel,

We haven't yet implemented this yet but this looks interesting. Do you have any examples of such implementation? What players do support this?

Joël 2014-11-13 16:03:54 UTC

Hi Yuri,

Both, jwplayer and flowplayer support, ‘Start’ and ‘Duration’
I think wowza server starts this function in 2012.

Example:
If you recorded a long video file on a remote server, and you are not able to cut it by an video editor.
You don’t want content on your server, twice.
If you want to show a small part of the video as a intro, without cutting.

Joel,

Do you use this somewhere so we could check Wowza config for this capability?
Also, your example won't work on iOS devices and user will be able to play the video without these limitations. Since it's an HLS VOD, the player will be able to pick up required chunks from the playlist and skip those parameters.

Notice that Nimble makes on-the-fly transmuxing so the generated chunks will remain only in file cache and then will be erased right after cache timeout (24 hours by default).

Hi Yuri

I wish I could give you a config, but I haven’t wowza running.
It can work with hls chunks, I think. Only the playback will start ± 10sec of the given start time, don’t you think? It’s an amazing function, I believe.
I sent you an email with screenshots of the wowza code, you can use in players.

We have seen this in software which allows timeshift mechanism for playing live streams behind say 5 hours as if its a channel which is as per different timezone. It uses timeshift + 5hrs and basically it records in HLS format so that hls can easily stream it without any processing. Its timeshift using vod.

Hi,

The DVR feature set is in our near roadmap. Follow us in our social networks to see when it's available.

Hi Yury,This feature is still not there even after this much long time.. This is the main part missing

This is a big feature set which requires proper architecture design, implementation and excellent testing. So we prefer spend more time to raise quality.
