DVR multiple edge servers

Paul 2016-03-11 21:44:05 UTC in Nimble Streamer

Please can you tell me about DVRs and edge server?

My stream comes from UK. I have an edge server in Australia.

I have a nimble re-streaming route set up, UK server HLS ABR -> AUS server HLS ABR
It works and I am happy to see that the stream is only sent to AUS when a viewer requests to watch it (this saves bandwidth so I can use small VPS in AUS)

So how does DVR work if a viewer in Aus wants to watch a recording?

Thanks

Hi,

At the moment DVR work only for RTMP, RTSP and MPEGTS so if you'd like to use it on edges, you need to send streams to your edges. To save your bandwidth, I recommend using delayed pull which makes your edge Nimble to pull streams only when there's a demand for it: http://blog.wmspanel.com/2015/09/live-rtmp-rtsp-pull-by-request.html

I just realised that this would make DVR a problem. Let's say, 2 hour broadcast in UK is recorded (on UK server), viewer in Australia doesn't watch live so stream is not pulled and recorded on Australia server.

What would you suggest as best option for viewer in Australia to watch something that was recorded on UK server?

Would this be a situation for HTTP origin ?

Thank you.

Do I need to have republish active for pull to work? The documentation doesnt say this.

I tested earlier with just pull, would not work.

So I decided to use republish and forget about pull.

Now I am monitor bandwidth, Aus server only uses bandwidth when I am watching the stream.

Then I realise that I still have got pull active.
(pull, and republish.)

So for testing, I stop the republish. Watching the stream, the video stops.

So I need to have republish active, and pull? Then it only uses bandwidth when somebody is watching?

This is a bit confusing. I would think republish is meant to send the stream constant, so it could be played back / transmuxed / recorded on DVR etc.
But it does not sent the stream constantly unless there is something at the other end pulling it?

Hello,

Could you please post this question to https://wmspanel.com/help with some details so we could follow up with that?

Thank you.

Well. My VPS control panel shows bandwidth has been used. But when I monitor bandwidth using linux program iftop,
it shows very little bandwidth being used, a few Kb/s and certainly not the 2Mbps which the edge is being sent.
This is very strange!

Do you know any reason iftop would not detect bandwidth coming in via nimble?
